10 Great Restaurants in Sofia

If you are a hedonistic traveler lost in the streets of Sofia, these are the places for you

  • 10420165_10152577950776064_8150714330266917762_nCatch’A maK: Always delicious food and perfect service. Located in a quiet street in the city center, near the „Vitosha“ boulevard. The restaurant offers an outside seating in a cosy garden and a reservation is advisable especially for dinners. A must is the traditional Bulgarian dish called „cachamak“ prepared in modern way, served with tomato sauce, cheese or bacon. Both the Greek style and the grilled calamari, as well the octopus and the Rene salad are my favorites. Best desserts: the lava cake and the French cake. Good variety of foreign and local wines and beers and very good prices. Cheap lunch menu every day and special seasonal dishes.
  • Hamachi: Probably the best sushi in town. The restaurant has relaxed atmosphere and charming garden, inside seating is also very pleasant, service is fast and good. On the menu you can find other Japanese dishes and special seafood meals. The prices are higher than these in the Happy Sushi, however the restaurant itself is more sophisticated, located in the „Lozenets“ district , just 10 minutes away from the subway station „National Stadium Vassil Levsky“.
  • Ресторант Щастливеца: 11265099_10153325464551064_77753196825682299_nSituated on the main shopping street in Sofia, called „Vitosha“, this restaurant is really easy to find. Two floors, beautiful decoration and very good service. Although the place is pretty big reservation is advisable, especially for a dinner and on weekends. The menu is huge and you can find both local and Mediterranean food, a lot of vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. Daily lunch menu and seasonal menu, good wine list, fare prices. The starters and the pasta are a must. Best summer refreshments you can try: lemonade and the elderberries juice.
  • La Pastaria: 12208012_10153699460706575_406867279_nThere are two restaurants with this name in Sofia, however I recommend the one located in the Sopharma Business Towers. Cuisine is Mediterranean, decoration is stylish, restaurant is spacious. The pasta is very tasty, all the starters and desserts are good and the fish is just wonderful. My favorites are the fresh pasta with mussels and the fried zucchini. If you want to reach the restaurant by public transportation, you just need to get off the subway at „Joliot-Curie“ station and head towards the building with the three towers, restaurant is on the first floor.
  • Made in Home: 10675522_10152916840141064_2738896638846630684_nAnother „boutique“ restaurant in the heart of the city, located in a backstreet of the „Vitosha“ boulevard (really close to „Catch’A maK“ and „Annette“). Every single table and chair is unique which makes the place really colorful and cosy. The service is great and the prices are comparable with the other restaurants mentioned here. I liked the pasta with boletes and the grilled calamari with vegetables and as far as I heard the vegetarian dishes are pretty good as well. The chocolate cake is really homemade and easily can bring back your childhood memories. Again reservation is preferable on weekends or Friday evening.
  • Eat.It Italian Food Corner:  The restaurant is located on the top floor of the Paradise Mall and has a huge terrace with amazing view. The place itself is pretty spacious and reservation is needed only if you are more than 10 people. Pasta, pizza, antipasti, sea food, salads and desserts – always fresh and tasty. Local celebrities use to go there and first time I went for a dinner, Sylvester Stallone was sitting on the table next to ours (apparently this was his favourite pizza place while he was shooting The Expendables in Sofia in 2013).
  • Lavanda: 11825591_10153497076086064_2016862835801578556_nChic restaurant with garden downstairs and terrace upstairs for a real romantic dinner (visible on the cover photo). Decoration is really nice and the service is top. The place might seem a little bit pricey, but the food is absolutely tasty – salads, starters, main dishes and desserts. Try the salad with calamari, the dough bags stuffed with lentil and goat cheese and the creme brulee. The wine list is bigger than the menu, everything is prepared and served with style. There is also a different lunch menu every day, the products are mainly seasonal and always fresh. They have also special offers, f.ex. a bottle of decent Sauvignon blanc and a portion of mussels in white wine for 26 leva only. Located in a small street next to the Radisson Blu Hotel in the city center, this restaurant is quite popular and you better call for a table in advance.
  • Клуб на Архитекта: Despite its cental location, this restaurant remains hidden for the crowds. You can escape the noise and the busy streets and soak in the little bit vintage, but sophisticated atmosphere. The service is just great and the menu offers both local and european cusine. Reservations for dinner are recommended.
  • La Casa Latina: IMG_20150728_200146Latin American specialties served in a relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is located near the pedestrian street „Vitosha“ and offers an outside seating in a nice garden during the warm months. The enchiladas and empanadas are really tasty and so is the mojito. My recommendation goes to the Caribbean style prepared seafood. Service is good and quick. There is live Cuban music almost every weekend, so you’d better reserve a table.
  • Annette: Moroccan restaurant in the same area as previously mentioned „Catch’A maK“ and „Made in Home“ but with the advantage of a spacious garden in the backyard. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Moroccan dishes, my favorites are the lamb meatballs and the couscous with vegetables.

  2. Deni, what a great list you have compiled – I have been to four of them – Casa Latina, Made in Home, Annette, and Shtastliveca. I love them all. Indeed, I was in Shtastliveca last night and had a scrumptious vegan pizza!

Your photos are beautiful, and made me hungry. Time for a smoothie! :))

  3. I have been to most of them. Guilty self-proclaimed foodie here! Exploring the restaurants in Sofia for good design and food is something like an expensive hobby for me.
Anyways, Lavanda is amazing though in my opinion really expensive probably because of the gourmet kind of food and really small portions.

  4. Cool list! I have wondered quite a few times what restaurant to choose! I have tried 8 out of those 10 and I can agree with you they are worth a dinner 🙂 While visiting the other 2, I am looking forward for part 2 of this post! Bon appetite!
